Welcome to jschramm.com. The idea for this site came from a need to consolidate all of my projects in one place. From here you will find news about my various projects, along with personal observations and any other news I care to share.
One of the benefits of this blog is that I will no longer be cluttering my various sites with news on updates and other site-related information. You can visit this blog if you are interested in finding out what is going on with one of my projects. This also gives me a better way to communicate with visitors and develop a rapport with them.
I have populated this site with all posts from Shiwej that are related to one of my projects or seem to fit better here. The original posts will remain on Shiwej, but all new posts there will be related to tech, humor, or the other topics I cover.
Do you have any questions or comments? Feel free to post them here.
Buy.com has a coupon where Buy.com customers receive a free GoDaddy domain with any Buy.com purchase. The offer is not compatible with any Buy.com coupon, special offer, or Instant Rebate.
Some users over at the SlickDeals.net forum say that you can add the coupon to your shopping cart, and then checkout with no other items in your shopping cart and you still get the domain. It takes about a day before you receive information on how to get the domain, so I will update this post if it works.
Anandtech has a great article on how Newegg ships your orders. They have mechanized a lot of the steps, and it’s remarkable how efficient they are and how cool the setup is. As a plus, there is a contest you can enter to win 1 of 5 AMD CPUs by Friday.
I’ve used Newegg a few times and I must say I was impressed with the experience. I bought my current 300GB external hard drive there, along with my wireless usb adapter.
The only problem I ran into was that FedEx kept trying to deliver the packages when I was at work, and I didn’t see the door message for a few days that let me sign a line for them to leave the package on their next visit.
So now whenever I get a package I put a note on the door for the delivery person to leave it there (be it UPS or FedEx).
Id like to take this time to introduce you to Kamambe. With Kamambe you can choose which menu tabs you want to view above the Google search box. You can also add new tabs. It works reasonably well, and updates will come as I receive feedback. Currently it works with english-based Google sites. If I receive requests for other languages they will be implemented.
This is something I always wanted to be able to do. Hopefully you have wanted it too.

Google has a history of releasing new features to a small number of users, and then rolling it out to more as time goes by. As an early adopter of their products it becomes frustrating when I don’t get these new features as they are released. I often don’t get them for a long time after the initial rollout.
An example is Web Clips, which allow you to read news headlines and other information from RSS feeds at the top of your emails. My parents received the feature before I did. Though in this case, when I did get the feature I was unimpressed and bothered by it. I quickly disabled it and have never given it a second thought.
What caused this post is the new Gmail feature of being able to send Google Talk messages to your contacts from within the web-based Gmail client. I was so excited by the chat histories, and more importantly being able to send messages from within Gmail. It seems like just about ever other blogger who posts about Google has the feature. Philipphas it, Nathan has it, Miel has it. And yet I don’t. Friends of mine who I had to spend months convincing to use Gmail even have it. And yet I don’t.
Where is the love? Is it because I don’t like Google Reader? Is it because I block your ads on all Google.com searches (which started as a protest when they only had candy canes and no candles next to the ads during the holidays)? You have all my information, the least you could do is give me this one little feature.
P.S. Sometimes I enable ads as they actually can be more useful than actual search results in some instances.
Update (2/13/06): 5 days later and I finally gained access to Google Talk from within Gmail. And now I’m happy. Though it’s a shame it doesn’t work on the secure version of Gmail that uses https.
